The recipient of a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science and Chinese from New York's Vassar College, Jonathan Kaiman concurrently studied the language at Qingdao University and Beijing Capital University of Business and Economics. In 2009, Jonathan Kaiman spent one year as a scholar researching folk songs with the Fulbright Research Program, which led to him pursuing a career as a journalist. During his research, he was told frequently of a folk tale about an American pilot who crash-landed near a Yi village during World War II. Years later, as a working journalist, he wrote a story about the tale for the Los Angeles Times and is producing a book on the topic for Random House.

Jonathan Kaiman held Beijing-based intern roles with the New York Times and Los Angeles Times before being hired as China correspondent for The Guardian in 2012. Over three years with the publication, he wrote more than 400 hard news and feature stories, including detailed accounts of Christian missionaries in Tibet and two Beijing entrepreneurs who made it their goal to disrupt China's funeral industry. He later worked one year as the Asia correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, and presently serves as its Beijing bureau chief.
